


{"id":56405,"date":"2025-07-23T13:33:50","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T08:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=56405"},"modified":"2025-07-24T11:14:47","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T05:44:47","slug":"winter-fog-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/winter-fog-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Fog Experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Winter Fog Experiment Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX), has completed a remarkable milestone of ten successful years of dedicated research into North India\u2019s dense winter fog.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Winter Fog Experiment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>launched in the winter of 2015<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was led by the <\/span><b>Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IITM) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), with support from the <\/span><b>India Meteorological Department<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IMD) and the <\/span><b>National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NCMRWF).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiFEX is one of the world\u2019s few <\/span><b>long-term open-field experiments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focused solely on fog \u2014 an elusive winter hazard that regularly disrupts air, rail, and road transport <\/span><b>across the Indo-Gangetic Plain.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objectives<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objectives of the Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX) are to <\/span><b>develop better now-casting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (next 6 hours) and <\/span><b>forecasting of winter fog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on various time and spatial scales.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help <\/span><b>reducing fog\u2019s adverse impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on aviation, transportation and economy, and loss of human life due to accidents<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How was it Conducted?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WiFEX scientists have deployed <\/span><b>advanced instruments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>micrometeorology towers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ceilometers, and high-frequency sensors to collect detailed data on temperature layers, humidity, wind, turbulence, soil heat, and aerosols \u2014 building an unmatched dataset that reveals how dense fog forms and disperses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These insights have powered the development of a high-resolution (3 km) probabilistic fog prediction model, which now stands among the region\u2019s most advanced tools for operational forecasting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Benefits: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This model can <\/span><b>reliably predict when fog will begin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>how dense it will be<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, how long it will last, and when it will clear \u2014 achieving more than 85% accuracy for very dense fog (visibility below 200 meters).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2146721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIB<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Winter Fog Experiment  was launched in the winter of 2015 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi.
