text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Etruscans, also known as the <\/span><b>Tyrrhenians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>inhabited <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the area that is now<\/span><b> Italy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their country was called <\/span><b>Tuscia, or Etruria.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etruria was located in the<\/span><b> central part of the Italian peninsula.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etruria was <\/span><b>bounded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the west<\/span><b> by the Tyrrhenian Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the north by the <\/span><b>Arno River, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and on the east and south by the <\/span><b>Tiber River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had a <\/span><b>strong navy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>dominated the seas on the western coast of Italy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Etruscans possessed the <\/span><b>biggest iron reserves in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the whole of the <\/span><b>western Mediterranean.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many <\/span><b>features of Etruscan culture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><b>adopted by the Romans, their successors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to power in the peninsula.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Etruscans <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were the <\/span><b>first in the Mediterranean region to construct a city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the basis of a <\/span><b>grid plan.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this plan, most of the streets were laid in a north-south direction with a few streets crossing them from the east-west direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Romans later followed this plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while laying out military camps and new cities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Etruscans <\/b><b>Social Classes<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scholars believe that there were<\/span><b> three social classes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in ancient Etruria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the top was a powerful<\/span><b> aristocratic, or noble class.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below them was a<\/span><b> middle class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that consisted of craftsmen, merchants, and sailors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there was a class of <\/span><b>enslaved people.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike ancient Greece and Rome, <\/span><b>women were considered equal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in status to men.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etruscan <\/span><b>women were often able to read and were educated.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Etruscans <\/b><b>Religion<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etruscans believed in a universe controlled by gods.
