text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President is elected by an <\/span><b>electoral college<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consisting of <\/span><b>members of both Houses of Parliament<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in accordance with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/proportional-representation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>system of proportional representation <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by means of the<\/span><b> single transferable vote, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the voting in such election is by <\/span><b>secret ballot.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Electoral College<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to elect a person to the office of the Vice-President consists of <\/span><b>all members of both Houses of Parliament.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>electoral college<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for electing the <\/span><b>President of India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprises <\/span><b>only the elected members of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice-President is <\/span><b>not a member of either House of Parliament or of a House of a Legislature <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of any state.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If a member of either House of Parliament or of a House of a Legislature <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of any state is <\/span><b>elected as Vice-President<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he is <\/span><b>deemed to have vacated his seat in that House <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the date he\/she enters his office as Vice-President.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person<\/span><b> cannot be elected as Vice-President unless he\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b>citizen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of India;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has completed the <\/span><b>age of 35 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><b> qualified for election as a member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person is <\/span><b>not also eligible if he holds any office of profit<\/b> <b>under the Government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of India or a State Government or any subordinate local authority.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>election <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to fill a vacancy<\/span><b> caused by the expiry of the term<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of office of Vice-President is <\/span><b>completed before the expiry of the term.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case a <\/span><b>vacancy arises by reasons of death, resignation or removal or otherwise,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>election <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to fill that vacancy is <\/span><b>held as soon as possible <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after the occurrence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> person so elected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is entitled to <\/span><b>hold office for a full term of 5 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the date he enters office.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Article 324 of the Constitution of India, the <\/span><b>authority to conduct elections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Office of Vice-President is vested in the E<\/span><b>lection Commission of India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other Provisions:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Returning Officer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually appointed to conduct the Vice-Presidential elections is the<\/span><b> Secretary-General of either House of the Parliament, by rotation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Any person qualified<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be elected and intending to stand for election as Vice-President is <\/span><b>required to be nominated by at least 20 MPs as proposers and at least 20 MPs as seconders.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A candidate seeking election as Vice-President is required to make a s<\/span><b>ecurity deposit of Rs.15,000\/-.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Disputes regarding Election of the Vice-President:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All doubts and disputes arising in connection with the election of the Vice-President are enquired into and <\/span><b>decided by the Supreme Court of India, whose decision is final.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
