Cambodia are currently fighting over the centuries-old Preah Vihear Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Preah Vihear Temple<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>Hindu temple<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the <\/span><b>Preah Vihear Province<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the <\/span><b>northern part of Cambodia.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is situated <\/span><b>atop a cliff on the Cambodia\u2013Thailand border<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>Dangrek Mountain range.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is dedicated to<\/span><b> Lord Shiva.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>built <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the period of the<\/span><b> Khmer Empire,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>eleventh and twelfth centuries.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was built firstly by<\/span><b> King Suryavarman I (1002-50) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and then <\/span><b>expanded <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upon <\/span><b>by Suryavarman II (1113-50).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>used by the ancient kings of Angkor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for over 800 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>After the decline of Hinduism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the region, the <\/span><b>temple gradually transformed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a <\/span><b>Buddhist monument<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is why it features some <\/span><b>Buddhist decorations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to its location, the Preah Vihear temple has been at the <\/span><b>heart of the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the 19th and 20th centuries.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1904, both countries signed a treaty granting Cambodia the right to occupy the temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Thai government contested the treaty and took control of the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led to a public protest by Cambodians in 1959.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To resolve the issue, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/international-court-of-justice-icj\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>International Court of Justice<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in The Hague <\/span><b>ruled in 1960, affirming Cambodia&#8217;s ownership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the temple.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July 2008, Preah Vihear was designated a <\/span><b>UNESCO World Heritage site.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Preah Vihear Temple <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an outstanding masterpiece of <\/span><b>Khmer architecture.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple is composed of a <\/span><b>series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavements and staircases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over an <\/span><b>800-metre-long axis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It features more than <\/span><b>five successive gopuras<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike other structures of this kind, the <\/span><b>gopuras <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are <\/span><b>connected by a long path a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><b> topped with multi-tiered platforms.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span
