text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comets are <\/span><b>large objects made of dust and ice <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>orbit the Sun.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best known for their l<\/span><b>ong, streaming tails, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these ancient objects are <\/span><b>leftovers from the formation of the solar system <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.6 billion years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comets are <\/span><b>mostly found way out in the solar system.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Some exist i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n a <\/span><b>wide disk beyond <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the orbit of <\/span><b>Neptune called the Kuiper Belt.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call these <\/span><b>short-period comets.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They take less than 200 years to orbit the Sun.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other comets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live <\/span><b>in the Oort Clou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d, the<\/span><b> sphere-shaped, outer edge of the solar system <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is about 50 times farther away from the Sun than the Kuiper Belt.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are called <\/span><b>long-period comets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they take much longer to orbit the Sun.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The comet with the longest known orbit takes more than 250,000 years to make just one trip around the Sun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comet is <\/span><b>made up of four visible parts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>nucleus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>coma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>ion tail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>dust tail.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>nucleus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a<\/span><b> solid body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically a few kilometres in diameter and made up of a <\/span><b>mixture of volatile ice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s (predominantly water ice) <\/span><b>and silicate and organic dust <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particles.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>coma <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the<\/span><b> freely escaping atmosphere around the nucleus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that forms <\/span><b>when the comet comes close to the Sun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>volatile ices sublimate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, carrying with them dust particles that are intimately mixed with the frozen ices in the nucleus.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> dust tail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms from those dust particles and is <\/span><b>blown back by solar radiation pressure to form a long curving tail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is <\/span><b>typically white or yellow <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in colour.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> ion tail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms from the <\/span><b>volatile gases in the coma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they are<\/span><b> ionized by ultraviolet photons from the Sun <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>blown away by the solar wind.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
