


{"id":57222,"date":"2025-11-24T11:16:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T05:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=57222"},"modified":"2025-11-24T16:02:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T10:32:13","slug":"brihadisvara-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/brihadisvara-temple\/","title":{"rendered":"Brihadeeswarar Temple"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Brihadeeswarar Temple Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marking World Heritage Week, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) organised a heritage walk and clean-up drive at the Brihadeeswarar Temple (Big Temple) in Thanjavur recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Brihadeeswarar Temple<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a Hindu temple dedicated to <\/span><b>Shiva <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located in <\/span><b>Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajesvaram.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> one of the largest temples in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is an example of <\/span><b>Dravidian architecture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chola-dynasty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chola period<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>built by emperor Raja Raja Chola I <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>completed in 1010 AD.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the \u201cGreat Living Chola Temples\u201d, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the <\/span><b>other two being the Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Brihadeeswarar Temple <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple stands amidst <\/span><b>fortified walls t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat were probably added in the 16th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The <\/span><b>vimanam (temple tower)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is<\/span><b> 216 ft (66 m) high<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is the <\/span><b>tallest in the world.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Kumbam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the<\/span><b> apex or the bulbous structure on the top)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the temple is <\/span><b>carved out of a single rock <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and weighs around<\/span><b> 80 tons.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temple complex spans over 40 acres and is decorated with masses of sculptures and inscriptions that spotlight the era&#8217;s devotion and craftsmanship.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a <\/span><b>big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> entire temple structure is made out of granite.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/Tiruchirapalli\/asi-conducts-clean-up-drive-heritage-walk-at-thanjavur-big-temple-to-mark-world-heritage-week\/article70314451.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brihadeeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
