text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tsunami is a <\/span><b>series of waves generated by <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><b>large and sudden displacement of the ocean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsunamis can have <\/span><b>devastating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wide-ranging <\/span><b>effects, especially in coastal regions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word tsunami is composed of the Japanese words &#8220;tsu&#8221; (which means harbor) and &#8220;nami&#8221; (which means &#8220;wave&#8221;).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Large <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/earthquakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">earthquakes <\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">below or near the ocean floor<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the <\/span><b>most common cause<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (about <\/span><b>80% of all known tsunamis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>triggered by earthquake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s), but <\/span><b>landslides, volcanic activity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain types of weather, and <\/span><b>meteorites can also cause tsunamis.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all <\/span><b>earthquakes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause tsunamis; they <\/span><b>must be strong and shallow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (at least 6.5 magnitude and less than 70 km from the Earth\u2019s surface), and <\/span><b>move the seafloor vertically.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsunamis <\/span><b>radiate outward in all direction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s from their source and can <\/span><b>move across entire ocean basins, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around islands,\u00a0 and into bays, sounds, and up rivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Out in the depths of the ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tsunami <\/span><b>waves do not dramatically increase in height.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But<\/span><b> as the waves travel inland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they build up to higher and <\/span><b>higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>speed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of tsunami waves <\/span><b>depends on ocean depth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than the distance from the source of the wave.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsunami waves may <\/span><b>travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only <\/span><b>slowing down <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><b> reaching shallow waters.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tsunamis can have <\/span><b>heights of up to 30 m<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (98 ft) and reach <\/span><b>speeds of 950 km per hour. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">It is<b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> hard to see<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">tsunami is approaching. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">obvious sign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">when coastal water retreats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just before the waves reach the shore.
