{"id":57909,"date":"2026-08-12T12:38:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T07:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=57909"},"modified":"2026-08-12T14:59:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T09:29:10","slug":"pm-national-dialysis-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pm-national-dialysis-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program (PMNDP) is presently implemented in all 36 States\/UTs covering 751 districts (including 44 linked districts) through 1,856 haemodialysis centres equipped with 13,535 haemodialysis machines, according to the Union Health Ministry. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> centrally-funded health scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rolled out in <\/span><b>2016 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the objective to <\/span><b>strengthen the district hospitals under <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/national-health-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Health Mission (NHM)<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make <\/span><b>dialysis services affordable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and accessible to the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under PMNDP, <\/span><b>dialysis service<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s are provided <\/span><b>free of cost to all Below Poverty Line (BPL) beneficiaries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the public health facilities<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while <\/span><b>non- BPL patient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s are <\/span><b>benefitted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><b>accessing the services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> close to the community at the<\/span><b> subsidized rates.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Initially<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Government recommended the setting up of <\/span><b>haemodialysis centres in all district hospitals.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on local requirements, <\/span><b>States <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been <\/span><b>encouraged to scale down the facilities to Community Health Centres (CHCs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the taluka level, especially in remote and tribal regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme has <\/span><b>two components<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> namely <\/span><b>Hemodialysis (HD) services &amp; Peritoneal dialysis (PD) services.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Hemodialysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HD, commonly known as <\/span><b>blood dialysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In HD, the blood is filtered through a machine that acts like an artificial kidney and is returned back into the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HD needs to be performed in a designated dialysis centre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is usually needed about 3 times per week, with each episode taking about 3-4 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Peritoneal dialysis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(PD, commonly known as water dialysis):\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In PD, the blood is cleaned without being removed from the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abdomen sac (lining) acts as a natural filter. A solution (mainly made up of salts and sugars) is injected into the abdomen that encourages filtration such that the waste is transferred from the blood to the solution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Close medical supervision <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>not required<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for most PD cases, thus making it a <\/span><b>feasible option for patients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who may want to <\/span><b>undergo dialysis in the home setting.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>PMNDP supports establishment of dialysis centres (In-house &amp;
