of Udhampur and Ramban, along with senior district officials, recently visited the headquarters of the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project at Tanger to take stock of progress made on the 1,800 MW project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>1,856-MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydropower plant on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chenab-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Chenab River<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Udhampur and Ramban districts of<\/span><b> Jammu and Kashmir.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been designed as a <\/span><b>run-of-the-river scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located <\/span><b>between the Baglihar project upstream <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>Salal project downstream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it <\/span><b>part of a continuous chain of hydropower installations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><b>Chenab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be the <\/span><b>largest hydroelectric project in the Union Territory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and one of the biggest in North India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is being built by the <\/span><b>National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classified as a project of national importance, it will feature a 192.5-meter<\/span><b> concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a reservoir covering more than 1,100 hectares.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will comprise nine turbines and an <\/span><b>underground power station.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will produce around 8000 million units of electricity every year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><b>regulating the flow of the Chenab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> River, the Sawalkote project could c<\/span><b>ontribute to flood mitigation downstream,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while also ensuring <\/span><b>better water management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for agriculture and domestic use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a key part of <\/span><b>India\u2019s plan to fully utilise its share of water from the western rivers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the 1960 <\/span><b>Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the<\/span><b> first major hydropower project on the Indus rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be accorded environmental clearance<\/span><b> following India\u2019s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on April 23, <\/span><b>2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following the Pahalgam terror
