work on the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the River Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir\u2014the first such new project to get the green light from the government after the abrogation of the Indus Water Treaty.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>1,856-MW run-of-the-river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydropower project on the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chenab-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b> Chenab River<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Ramban District of <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be the <\/span><b>largest hydroelectric project in the Union Territory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and one of the biggest in North India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has been in the <\/span><b>planning stage since the 1980s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has undergone multiple revisions to address environmental, ecological, and technical concerns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will be built by<\/span><b> the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will comprise <\/span><b>nine turbines <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and an <\/span><b>underground power station.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will feature a<\/span><b> Roller Compacted Concrete Gravity Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a height of 192.5 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will produce around 8000 million units of electricity every year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant will ensure <\/span><b>reliable power supply <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the region, <\/span><b>particularly during<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the harsh <\/span><b>winter months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>when electricity demand peaks and shortages are common<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also has the potential to <\/span><b>turn J-K into a power-surplus region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating scope for exporting surplus energy to the national grid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><b>regulating the flow of the Chenab River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Sawalkote project could contribute to <\/span><b>flood mitigation downstream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while also ensuring better water management for agriculture and domestic use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a key <\/span><b>part of India\u2019s plan to fully utilise its share of water from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>western rivers under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>first major hydropower project <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the Indus rivers to be accorded environmental clearance <\/span><b>following India\u2019s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:
