{"id":5844,"date":"2022-12-14T08:30:03","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T03:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5844"},"modified":"2025-03-27T11:15:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T05:45:21","slug":"what-is-base-editing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-base-editing\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Base Editing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>\u00a0<strong>About Base Editing:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bases are the language of life.<\/li>\n<li>Just as letters in the alphabet spell out words that carry meaning, the billions of bases in one person\u2019s DNA spell out the instruction manual for his\/her body.<\/li>\n<li>Base Editing treatment is a <strong>modification of chimeric antigen receptor, or CAR, T-cell therapy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>But instead of using the <strong>CRISPR gene editing technique<\/strong> to modify the patient\u2019s immune cells, the clinicians used the more precise base editing technique to alter donor immune cells.<\/li>\n<li>With advances in genetic technology, scientists have been able to zoom into a precise part of the genetic code to alter the molecular structure of just one base, effectively changing its genetic instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Those edited cells are given to the patient to \u201crapidly find and destroy T-cells in the body, including leukemic T-cells.<\/li>\n<li>Base editing is an even more precise gene editing technique than CRISPR and has fewer risks of unwanted effects on the chromosomes and thus less risk of side effects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL):<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>T-ALL affects the stem cells in the bone marrow that produce a particular kind of <strong>white blood cells (WBC) called T lymphocytes (T cells).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These cells provide a person immunity by killing cells carrying infections, activating other immune cells, and regulating the immune response.<\/li>\n<li>At least 20% of these WBC are atypical\u2013 as they accumulate in the bone marrow, they crowd out \u201cgood\u201d WBCs and hence weaken the immune system.<\/li>\n<li>These unhealthy cells can also accumulate in other parts of the body like the liver, spleen and lymph nodes.<\/li>\n<li>While found in both children and adults, T-ALL\u2019s incidence decreases with age.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Typical treatment for T-ALL is similar to that of any leukaemia\u2013 chemotherapy and stem cell\/bone marrow transplant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1)\u00a0What is CRISPR?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. It is a powerful tool for editing genomes allowing researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function.
