{"id":58541,"date":"2025-08-07T12:23:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T06:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=58541"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:26:22","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T07:56:22","slug":"district-flood-severity-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/district-flood-severity-index\/","title":{"rendered":"District Flood Severity Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>District Flood Severity Index Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar have developed a District Flood Severity Index.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About District Flood Severity Index<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>accounts for the historical severity of floods in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India based on the number of people they have affected and the spread and duration of such floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Parameters used<\/b>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes into account the mean duration in days of all flooding events in a district.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percentage of area that is historically flooded<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total number of deaths, number of people injured<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Population in the district.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is developed using the <\/span><b>India Flood Inventory with Impacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IFI-Impacts) database containing data of variables representing the occurrence of floods and damage due to floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India Flood Inventory with Impacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains death and damage statistics, and combines population and historically flooded area information sourced from a national hydrologic-hydrodynamic modeling system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the district is the most relevant unit for planning and decision making, a DFSI would be of immense value for flood management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Findings of District Flood Severity Index<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> turns out to be number one on the index followed by many districts in the Indo-Gangetic Plain and in Assam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thiruvananthapuram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is number <\/span><b>one in terms of flooding events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is absent in the top 30 districts in the flood severity index.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dhemaji, Kamrup, and Nagaon districts in Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are three of the five districts in India that have experienced over 178 flooding events, or more than three events per year on an average.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Urban flooding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs partly because of hydrometeorological reasons and also due to unwise urban development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/a-new-district-flood-severity-index-factors-in-flood-impact-on-people\/article69889327.ece#:~:text=Researchers%20from%20IIT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TH<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The District Flood Severity Index accounts for the historical severity of floods in India based on the number of people they have affected and the spread and duration of such floods.
