{"id":58641,"date":"2025-08-08T12:34:21","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T07:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=58641"},"modified":"2025-08-08T13:43:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T08:13:11","slug":"hepatitis-d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hepatitis-d\/","title":{"rendered":"Hepatitis D"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Hepatitis D Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the reclassification of hepatitis D as cancerous, emphasising the urgency for preventing viral hepatitis, which is a growing public health crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Hepatitis D<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>serious liver infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by the <\/span><b>hepatitis D virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HDV).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>incompetent virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>requires hepatitis B virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HBV) <\/span><b>for replication.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means it cannot cause infection alone and triggers co-infections only with the hepatitis B virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis D only affects people who already have hepatitis B either simultaneously or sequentially.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hepatitis B &amp; D co-infection runs a more severe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> course for risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis <\/span><b>B can cause liver cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even <\/span><b>without causing cirrhosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it gets integrated in the DNA of cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis D virus augments the carcinogenic effect of Hepatitis B.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>All types of hepatitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are associated with acute liver infection; however, only <\/span><b>hepatitis B, C, and D can lead to chronic infections <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a higher risk of liver cirrhosis, failure or cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis D is associated with a two- to six-fold higher risk of liver cancer compared with hepatitis B.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mode of transmission is <\/span><b>similar to hepatitis B and C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that is through parenteral <\/span><b>route or injections and transfusion, mother to child transmission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>sexual contact.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevention:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Universal hepatitis B vaccination indirectly prevents hepatitis D.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis B vaccine may be given in any of the following schedules: <\/span><b>Birth, 1 and 6 months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; birth, 6 and 14 weeks; 6, 10 and 14 weeks; birth, 6, 10 and 14 weeks.
