{"id":58657,"date":"2026-01-03T12:52:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T07:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=58657"},"modified":"2026-01-03T13:17:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T07:47:49","slug":"vishnugad-pipalkoti-hydro-electric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vishnugad-pipalkoti-hydro-electric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 60 people were injured after a loco train carrying workers and officials hit a goods train inside the Pipalkoti tunnel of the Vishnugad\u2013Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>run-of-river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydropower scheme being developed on the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/alakananda-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b> Alaknanda River <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a major <\/span><b>tributary of the Ganga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> River) in the Chamoli district of <\/span><b>Uttarakhand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an installed capacity of <\/span><b>444 MW (4 \u00d7 111 MW)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a gross head of approximately 237 metres, VPHEP is designed to <\/span><b>provide peaking power to India\u2019s Northern Grid.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, when completed, will generate an estimated 1,665 gigawatt-hours (or million kilowatt-hours) of electricity in a typical year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project includes a <\/span><b>65-meter diversion dam, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><b>13.4-km headrace tunnel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><b> 3-km tailrace tunnel,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an <\/span><b>underground powerhouse.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>All water diverted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the river will be <\/span><b>returned to the river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approximately <\/span><b>18 km after the point of diversion.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being <\/span><b>developed by THDC India Ltd <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited) and f<\/span><b>inanced by a US$ 648 million loan from the World Bank.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">THDC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">joint venture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the<\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> government of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> government of Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/dehradun\/uttarakhand-train-crash-60-injured-as-two-loco-trains-collide-in-vishnugad-pipalkoti-hydroelectric-project-tunnel\/articleshow\/126262146.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TOI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) is a run-of-river hydropower scheme being developed on the Alaknanda River in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
