{"id":5880,"date":"2022-12-22T08:48:40","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T03:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=5880"},"modified":"2025-03-27T11:27:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T05:57:51","slug":"what-are-eco-sensitive-zones-esz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-are-eco-sensitive-zones-esz\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Eco-Sensitive Zones:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the National Wildlife Action Plan (2002-2016), issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, <strong>land within 10 km of the boundaries of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries<\/strong> is to be notified as <strong>eco-fragile zones or Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>While the 10-km rule is implemented as a general principle, the extent of its application can vary.<\/li>\n<li>Areas beyond 10-km can also be notified by the Union government as ESZs, if they hold <strong>larger ecologically important \u201csensitive corridors\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Why are Eco-Sensitive Zones created?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the guidelines issued by the Environment Ministry in 2011, Eco-Sensitive Zones are created as \u201cshock absorbers\u201d for the protected areas, to minimize the negative impact on the \u201cfragile ecosystems\u201d by certain human activities taking place nearby.<\/li>\n<li>These areas are meant to act as a transition zone from areas requiring higher protection to those requiring lesser protection.<\/li>\n<li>They are not meant to hamper the daily activities of people living in the vicinity, but are meant to guard the protected areas and \u201crefine the environment around them\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What are activities prohibited in an Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Commercial mining, saw mills, commercial use of wood, etc., apart from regulated activities like felling of trees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What are the permitted activities?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ongoing agricultural or horticultural practices, rainwater harvesting, organic farming, among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) How many Eco-Sensitive Zones are in India?<\/h3>\n<p>Ecologically Sensitive Zones are notified by the Ministry of Environment ,Forests and Climate Change under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (National Wildlife Action Plan, 2002-2016).
