{"id":60324,"date":"2025-08-21T15:03:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T09:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=60324"},"modified":"2025-08-21T15:28:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T09:58:06","slug":"giahs-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/giahs-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"GIAHS Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>GIAHS Programme Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare informed the Lok Sabha that India currently hosts three Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About GIAHS Programme<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s programme <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was launched in response to <\/span><b>global threats to family farming and traditional agricultural systems,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as climate change, community displacements and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> biodiversity loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aiming to <\/span><b>strike a balance between conservation, sustainable adaptation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and socioeconomic development, the programme helps to mitigate the threats faced by farmers while enhancing the benefits of farming systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It uses a <\/span><b>multistakeholder approach,<\/b> <b>GIAHS provides<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical assistance, promotes the value of traditional agricultural knowledge and stimulates markets for agricultural products, agrotourism and other market opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>India\u2019s GIAHS<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Koraput region (Odisha): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is renowned for its <\/span><b>subsistence paddy cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, predominantly on highland slopes, and is home to a <\/span><b>vast diversity of paddy landraces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and farmer-developed varieties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also harbors <\/span><b>rich genetic resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medicinal plants, deeply interwoven with the indigenous tribal communities and their traditional knowledge systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kuttanad system (Kerala):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a unique <\/span><b>below-sea-level farming landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, comprising wetlands for paddy cultivation and fish catching, garden lands for coconut and food crops, and inland water bodies for fishing and shell collection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Saffron Park of Kashmir:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It represents a <\/span><b>rich agro-pastoral system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characterized by <\/span><b>traditional saffron cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, intercropping, and the use of organic farming practices, all of which contribute to maintaining local biodiversity and soil health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2158029#:~:text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIB<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GIAHS Programme  is a Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s programme launched at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002.
