


{"id":60623,"date":"2025-08-25T13:11:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T07:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=60623"},"modified":"2025-08-25T17:21:35","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T11:51:35","slug":"integrated-air-defence-weapon-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/integrated-air-defence-weapon-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrated Air Defence Weapon System"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Integrated Air Defence Weapon System<\/b> <b>Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the first flight-tests of an Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Integrated Air Defence Weapon System<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-layered air defence system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes three components \u2014 <\/span><b>Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missiles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(QRSAM), the <\/span><b>advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VSHORADS) missiles, and a <\/span><b>high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DEW).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QRSAM has been designed and developed by the DRDO, VSHORADS and DEW have been developed by <\/span><b>Research Centre Imarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RCI) and <\/span><b>Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CHESS) respectively, both Hyderabad-based facilities of the DRDO.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The integrated operation of all these weapon system components is controlled by a <\/span><b>Centralised Command and Control Centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, developed by the <\/span><b>Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Three Components of the IADWS<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>QRSAM:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>short-range Surface to Air Missile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAM) system, primarily designed to provide a <\/span><b>protective shield <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to moving armoured columns of the Army from enemy aerial attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire weapon system is configured on highly mobile platforms. It has search and track capability and can fire on short halts. The system has an operation range of three to 30 kilometers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The QRSAM weapon ensemble consists of a fully automated command and control system, two radars \u2014 <\/span><b>Active Array Battery Surveillance Radar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Active Array Battery Multifunction Radar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and one launcher. Both the radars have a <\/span><b>360-degree coverage with \u2018search on move\u2019 and \u2018track on move\u2019 capabilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>VSHORADS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>fourth-generation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, technically advanced <\/span><b>miniaturised Man Portable Air Defence System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MANPAD). This missile system has the capability to meet the needs of all the three <\/span><b>branches of the Armed Forces \u2014 Army, Navy and Air Force.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Directed Energy Weapon (DEW):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Earlier this April, the CHESS facility conducted a successful field demonstration of the <\/span><b>land version of the Vehicle mounted Laser<\/b> <b>DEW MK-II(A).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It defeated <\/span><b>fixed wing UAV and swarm drones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing structural damage and disabling their surveillance sensors. With this, India has joined the exclusive club of global powers who possess such a system.
