{"id":60633,"date":"2025-08-25T13:25:54","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T07:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=60633"},"modified":"2025-08-25T17:21:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T11:51:27","slug":"bloom-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bloom-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Bloom Syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Bloom Syndrome Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, a 12-year-old girl diagnosed with the Bloom Syndrome, underwent a bone marrow transplant using stem cells from her younger brother at a private hospital in Chennai.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Bloom Syndrome<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloom Syndrome or <\/span><b>BSyn is a genetic disorder,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which the <\/span><b>BLM gene,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a protein-coding gene, does<\/span><b> not function as it should.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It leads to growth delays, increased vulnerabilities to infections, sensitivity to the sun and an increased risk for certain cancers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BLM gene is a <\/span><b>gene that makes a protein involved<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in maintaining the structure of DNA, when DNA is copied in a cell, and in repairing damaged DNA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Mutations in the BLM gene may <\/span><b>cause cells to lose their ability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to repair damaged DNA, which may <\/span><b>lead to abnormal cell growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other names<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Bloom Syndrome are <\/span><b>Bloom-Torre-Machacek syndrome<\/b> <b>and congenital telangiectatic erythema.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How does it Occur?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>inherited in an autosomal recessive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pattern. This means that if both parents have a mutation in one of their two BLM genes and if the child inherits two of the disease-causing variants of the gene, then the disorder occurs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is seen <\/span><b>most commonly in the Eastern European<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ashkenazi) Jewish population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Signs and Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Poor growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a common clinical feature &#8212; this happens during the development of the foetus and after birth. <\/span><b>Below normal average height<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and head circumference may be seen. There may be abnormalities in certain features such as <\/span><b>narrowing of the head and face<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prominent ears and nose, long arms and legs and high-pitched voices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Skin lesions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The skin is very sensitive to sunlight and red rashes may develop after exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Insulin resistance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads to an increased risk of diabetes, while other issues include immune deficiencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Bloom Syndrome are at a <\/span><b>higher risk of contracting infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as ear and lung infections and also chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In adults, male sterility and female <\/span><b>infertility may occur.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloom Syndrome increases the risk of <\/span><b>developing cancer, and at an early age.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involves a multi-disciplinary approach.
