However, the concept of diaspora need not be confined to crossing national borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, terms like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pravasi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">videshi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often apply to long-distance <\/span><b>internal migrants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. For example, Odia workers in Surat describe their relocation as going \u201cabroad.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>diasporic experience arises from crossing significant cultural zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether within or outside national boundaries. Yet, compared to the extensive literature on international migration, research on <\/span><b>internal diasporas remains limited<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Internal Diasporas in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal diasporas differ from simple migration as they reflect both <\/span><b>historical and recent population movements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have established enduring cultural and linguistic communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, while Census data in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, records few Gujarati \u2018migrants\u2019, the <\/span><b>language Census identifies over 60,000 Gujarati speakers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a number larger than India\u2019s diaspora in many countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the Indian diaspora in Mauritius, which originated from 19th-century migration, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such communities emerge from layers of past and present movements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociological Bulletin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimated internal and international diasporas through language data.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strikingly, while India\u2019s international diaspora is about <\/span><b>30 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the internal diaspora\u2014measured by dispersed language groups across states\u2014totals <\/span><b>over 100 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighting a far more significant domestic diasporic experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Patterns of India\u2019s Internal Diasporas<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among Indian language groups, <\/span><b>Punjabi, Malayalam, and Tamil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the most dispersed (over 10% relative to their size), followed by <\/span><b>Telugu and Gujarati<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hindi speakers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including Bhojpuri and Marwari) form the largest diaspora overall but are less dispersed proportionally, while <\/span><b>Marathi, Kannada, and Bengali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the least dispersed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal diasporas also show a distinction between <\/span><b>\u2018old\u2019 communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Gujarati traders and weavers in Tamil Nadu for centuries, and <\/span><b>\u2018new\u2019 communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked to more recent business migrations in Karnataka and Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant clusters include the Telugu diaspora in West Bengal and Maharashtra, complementing the well-known Telugu presence in the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, except for Malayalam and Tamil, <\/span><b>all major Indian languages have larger internal than international diasporas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with nearly <\/span><b>one-third of the internal diaspora concentrated in India\u2019s ten largest cities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This highlights the enduring and evolving role of internal migration in shaping India\u2019s cultural and linguistic landscapes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Cultivation of Diasporic Identities<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diasporic identities are often sustained through <\/span><b>community associations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Bengali groups organising Durga Puja, Marathi Mandals promoting Ganapati festivals, and Gujarati Samaj bodies in India and abroad.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gujarat State Non-Resident Gujaratis Foundation once recorded 176 Gujarati associations within India and 120 overseas, underscoring their scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>key marker of diasporic identity is the preservation of language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though this tends to weaken over generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some communities balance their native and local languages, in highly cosmopolitan settings, learning local languages is sometimes deemed unnecessary, reflecting varied patterns of cultural adaptation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Rethinking Diaspora: Beyond Borders<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenges of <\/span><b>integration and intergenerational conflicts<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between first- and second-generation migrants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, evident in cases of international migration, are equally visible within India\u2019s internal diasporas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, despite being nearly <\/span><b>three times larger than international diasporas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they remain understudied.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viewing diasporas through the lens of <\/span><b>linguistic dispersion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights their interlinkages \u2014 for instance, Antwerp\u2019s diamond trade with Surat or West Asia\u2019s oil sector links with Kerala were enabled by Gujarati and Malayalam diasporas in Mumbai.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal migration often precedes international migration, and sometimes the reverse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting diaspora to national borders is misleading; India\u2019s true diasporic experience is closer to <\/span><b>100 million people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shaping the spread of <\/span><b>customs, cuisines, and cultures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both abroad and within India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognising the <\/span><b>subnational as part of the transnational<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is essential to fully understand what it means to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">videshi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 outside one\u2019s homeland, whether abroad or within the country itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <a
