Amarnath Ramakrishna.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Archaeological Survey of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASI, under the <\/span><b>Ministry of Culture,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Government of India, is a <\/span><b>premier organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>archaeological research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>protection of the tangible heritage of the nation.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>established in 1861 by Sir Alexander Cunningham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its <\/span><b>headquarters in New Delhi.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>After independence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was established as a <\/span><b>statutory body under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AMASR Act).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prime concern of ASI is the <\/span><b>maintenance of ancient monuments, archaeological sites,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and remains of national importance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, it <\/span><b>regulates all archaeological activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country as per the <\/span><b>provisions of the AMASR Act.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also <\/span><b>regulates the Antiquities and Art Treasure Act, 1972.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Central Government has declared <\/span><b>3679 monuments and sites as of national importance, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and ASI shoulders the responsibility of protecting and maintaining them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">The organization has a <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">large workforce of trained archaeologists, conservators, epigraphists, architects, and scientists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for conducting archaeological research projects through its Circles, Museums, Excavation Branches, Prehistory Branch, Epigraphy Branches, Science Branch, Horticulture Branch, Building Survey Project, Temple Survey Projects, and Underwater Archaeology Wing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/the-asi-is-facing-a-credibility-crisis\/article69971421.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TH<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Archaeological Survey of India, under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is a premier organisation for archaeological research and protection of the tangible heritage of the nation.
