{"id":60794,"date":"2025-08-26T12:11:52","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T06:41:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=60794"},"modified":"2025-08-26T13:02:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T07:32:09","slug":"minicoy-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/minicoy-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Minicoy Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Minicoy Island Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 12-year-old tigress, which had been sick and roaming near the forest boundary in the Singara forest range of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR), died recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Minicoy Island<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minicoy, locally known as <\/span><b>Maliku<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is the<\/span><b> second largest and southernmost island in <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/laccadive-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lakshadweep<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minicoy is <\/span><b>famous for coral reefs and white sand beaches <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amidst the vast expanse of the <\/span><b>Arabian sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is\u00a0 crescent-shaped and has an area of 4.80 sq.km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This island <\/span><b>lies near the 9-degree channel,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is <\/span><b>one of the busiest shipping routes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is about <\/span><b>130 km from the northernmost island of the Maldives.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a <\/span><b>very large lagoon on the western side,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> measuring about 6 km across the two entrances, one on the west and the other on the northernmost point. The lagoon area is 30.60 sq.km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island is about 2 m above the mean sea level on the western side and about 3 to 4 m on the eastern side, and is 11 km long.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>lighthouse of the island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is<\/span><b> one of the oldest and was constructed in 1885.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minicoy is<\/span><b> set apart from the Northern group of islands by its culture.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main attraction of the island is its <\/span><b>carefully arranged villages, known as \u2018Avah\u2019.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Each Avah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has its <\/span><b>own internal organization headed by a Moopan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, around which the life of the community rests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Every village has its own village house<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
