style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows engineers to evaluate critical systems such as parachute deployment in abort scenarios, performance during partial parachute failure, and crew module safety during splashdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it cannot fully replicate actual <\/span><b>re-entry conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since helicopters cannot reach sufficient altitudes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address this, ISRO conducts <\/span><b>sub-orbital or orbital tests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014such as the <\/span><b>Test Vehicle Abort Mission (TV-D1) in October 2023<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014to validate the <\/span><b>crew escape system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and performance under real re-entry conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Purpose of IADT-1<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IADT-1 was conducted to <\/span><b>evaluate the parachute-based deceleration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system crucial for safely bringing back the Gaganyaan crew module after re-entry.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this test, an uncrewed capsule was dropped from a helicopter at about 3 km altitude, with parachutes expected to deploy in a precise sequence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process simulated the final stages of a real mission, where the capsule is slowed first by atmospheric drag and heat shields, then by drogue parachutes, and finally by three large main parachutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal was to ensure the capsule reduced its speed to about 8 m\/s before splashdown.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>IADT-1 in the Gaganyaan Goals<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gaganyaan mission is only the first step in India\u2019s broader human spaceflight roadmap.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has set ambitious targets, including establishing the
