{"id":60913,"date":"2025-08-27T12:21:38","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T06:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=60913"},"modified":"2025-08-28T13:32:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T08:02:08","slug":"kani-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kani-tribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Kani Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Kani Tribe Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Kuttimathan Kani belongs to the Kani tribal community who revealed Arogyapacha has died.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kani Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kani tribals or <\/span><b>Kanikarars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a <\/span><b>traditionally nomadic community,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who now lead a settled life in the forests of the <\/span><b>Agasthyamalai hills of the Western Ghats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Thiruvananthapuram <\/span><b>district of Kerala.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Kanikkarar settlement has a community council for <\/span><b>maintaining social control.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of the <\/span><b>Mootukani <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(chief), the <\/span><b>Vilikani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (convenor) and the <\/span><b>Pilathi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (physician and priest). All these offices are hereditary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional structure of the community was that of <\/span><b>a highly coordinated unit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the control of a <\/span><b>tribal chief, called the Moottukani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally the Moottukani combined the <\/span><b>roles of the law giver, protector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dispenser of justice, physician and priest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pilathi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are believed to have magical powers and perform various rituals and chant mantras with the help of an <\/span><b>instrument named \u2018Kokara.\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the Kanis live in <\/span><b>several tribal hamlets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each consisting of 10 to 20 families dispersed in and around the forest areas of Thiruvananthapuram district.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Occupation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Kani tribe\u2019s traditional occupations include the <\/span><b>production of handicrafts, seasonal<\/b> <b>collection of minor forest products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as honey and beeswax, and cultivation of edible plants such as tapioca, banana, millets and cash crops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Language:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They speak Tamil and Malayalam as their language.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have vast <\/span><b>knowledge about medicinal plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kani tribal customs, only the Plathies have the right to transfer and disseminate their traditional medical knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Source:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/wildlife-biodiversity\/remembering-kuttimathan-kani-the-forest-elder-who-gave-a-wonder-herb-to-the-world-but-died-in-poverty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DTE<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kani Tribe Kani tribals or Kanikarars are a traditionally nomadic community, who now lead a settled life in the forests of the Agasthyamalai hills.
