{"id":61038,"date":"2025-08-28T12:20:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T06:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=61038"},"modified":"2025-08-28T13:31:29","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T08:01:29","slug":"glanders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/glanders\/","title":{"rendered":"Glanders"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Glanders Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Department of Animal Husbandry &amp; Dairying (DAHD) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry &amp; Dairying\u00a0 has issued the Revised National Action Plan on Glanders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Glanders<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by the <\/span><b>bacterium Burkholderia mallei.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It primarily affects equines such as <\/span><b>horses, mules, and donkeys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and poses risks to <\/span><b>other animals as well as humans.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Signs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disease causes <\/span><b>nodules and ulcerations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the respiratory tract and lungs in animals. A skin form, known as \u2018farcy\u2019, also occurs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glanders is <\/span><b>commonly contracted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> via the following routes:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingestion of food or water contaminated with nasal discharge from infected (carrier) animals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact with contaminated harness components<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingestion of infected horse meat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glanders has traditionally been clinically categorized into <\/span><b>nasal, pulmonary and cutaneous forms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on the most commonly affected organ systems in equines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains sporadically reported in a number of <\/span><b>Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and South American countries.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glanders is an WOAH-listed disease as described in the Terrestrial Animal Health Code of the <\/span><b>World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As indicated in the WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code any occurrence of glanders must be notified to the WOAH.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is notifiable under the <\/span><b>Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals (PCICDA) Act, 2009.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2161305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>PIB<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Glanders is caused by Burkholderia mallei, a bacterial disease affecting horses, donkeys, and mules, with risks of transmission to humans.
