report on how safe Indian cities really are for women. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Annual Report and Index on Women\u2019s Safety (NARI) 2025<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Released by the National Commission for Women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NARI 2025 offers the telling <\/span><b>reality of the urban safety landscape.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report, a collaborative effort by the Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA), Pvalue Analytics, The NorthCap University, and Jindal Global Law School, is based on a <\/span><b>survey of 12,770 women across 31 cities in all states.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Highlights of the <\/b><b>National Annual Report and Index on Women\u2019s Safety (NARI) 2025<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It placed the <\/span><b>national safety score at 65%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, categorising cities as \u201cmuch above\u201d, \u201cabove\u201d, \u201cbelow\u201d or \u201cmuch below\u201d this benchmark.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar, and Mumbai <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have emerged as the<\/span><b> safest cities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country<\/span><b> for women,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while <\/span><b>Patna, Jaipur, Faridabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Srinagar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Ranchi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were <\/span><b>ranked the lowest.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kohima and other <\/span><b>top-ranked cities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were <\/span><b>associated with stronger gender equity, civic participation, policing,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>women-friendly infrastructure.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the other end of the spectrum, cities like Patna and Jaipur fared poorly due to weak institutional responsiveness, patriarchal norms, and gaps in urban infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, <\/span><b>six in ten women <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveyed<\/span><b> felt \u201csafe\u201d in their city,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but <\/span><b>40%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still <\/span><b>considered themselves \u201cnot so safe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201cunsafe\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Prevalence of harassment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains <\/span><b>high, with 7% women reporting at least one incident <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of harassment in public spaces in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>highest risk group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>women under 24 years <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of age (<\/span><b>14% reported harassmen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">V<\/span><b>erbal harassment was most common (58%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with physical, psychological, economic, and sexual harassment reported less frequently.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Neighborhoods (38%) and transport (29%) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were the <\/span><b>main hotspots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for harassment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of response, <\/span><b>28% of women confronted harassers,<\/b> <b>25% left the scene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>21% sought safety in crowds,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>20% reported to authorities.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study revealed <\/span><b>sharp drops in perceptions of safety at night,<\/b> <b>particularly in public transport and recreational spaces.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><b>86% of women felt safe in educational institutions during daylight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hours, <\/span><b>safety perceptions fall sharply at night<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or off-campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report shows <\/span><b>low levels of faith in the redressal mechanism.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Only one in three victims <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of harassment <\/span><b>filed a formal complaint.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Only one in four women<\/b> <b>expressed confidence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>authorities would take effective action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their safety complaints.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A concerning <\/span><b>53% were unaware whether their workplaces had<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/the-posh-act-the-indian-law-on-sexual-harassment-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prevention of Sexual Harassment<\/a><\/strong> (<\/span><b>POSH) policy in place.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Even when incidents are reported, only 22% are formally registered,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and
