


{"id":6203,"date":"2026-03-07T11:04:39","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T05:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6203"},"modified":"2026-03-07T15:29:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T09:59:54","slug":"low-temperature-thermal-desalination-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/low-temperature-thermal-desalination-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Low-temperature Thermal Desalination Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Low Temperature Thermal Desalination Technology Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the union Minister for Earth Sciences visited the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kavaratti in Lakshadweep and reviewed the functioning of desalination facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Low Temperature Thermal Desalination Technology<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a process under which the <\/span><b>warm surface sea water is flash evaporated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at low pressure and the vapour is condensed with cold deep sea water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LTTD technology <\/span><b>does not require any chemical pre and post-treatment of seawater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thus the pollution problems are minimal and suitable for island territories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Working Principle<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This technique works on the principle that water in the <\/span><b>ocean 1,000 or 2,000 feet below<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about 4\u00ba C to 8\u00ba C colder than surface water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, salty surface water is collected in a tank and <\/span><b>subject to high pressure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (via an external power source).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pressured water vapourises and this is trapped in tubes or a chamber.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold water plumbed from the ocean depths is passed over these tubes and the vapour condenses into fresh water and the resulting salt diverted away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>produces potable water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without the use of chemical additives or high-pressure membranes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Since no effluent treatment is required, it gives <\/span><b>less operational maintenance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems compared to other desalination processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first LTTD plant in Lakshadweep was commissioned in Kavaratti in 2005.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2236133&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Low Temperature Thermal Desalination Technology is a process under which the warm surface sea water is flash evaporated at low pressure and the vapour is condensed with cold deep sea water.
