{"id":62323,"date":"2026-01-07T11:52:43","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T06:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=62323"},"modified":"2026-01-07T15:08:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:38:46","slug":"wangchu-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wangchu-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Wangchu Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adani Group recently commenced the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project in Bhutan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>570 MW run-of-river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydropower project being built on the <\/span><b>Wangchu River\/basin in Chukha District, Bhutan.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wangchu River (also called Raid\u0101k River in India) is a significant <\/span><b>tributary of the Brahmaputra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being <\/span><b>developed by Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>joint venture company<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formed by <\/span><b>India\u2019s Adani Power Limited (APL) and Bhutan\u2019s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following a shareholders\u2019 agreement signed in September 2025.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>DGPC holds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a controlling <\/span><b>51%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stake in the venture, with <\/span><b>Adani Power <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">owning the remaining <\/span><b>49%.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project will involve an investment of \u20b96,000 crore.\u00a0 It will be implemented on a <\/span><b>build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) basis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility will function as a peaking run-of-river plant, helping Bhutan manage seasonal fluctuations in hydropower generation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility will feature four turbines, each rated at 142.5 MW, producing roughly 2,478.93 GWh annually.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">The Wangchu Project will <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">meet Bhutan\u2019s electricity demand during winters.<\/b> <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Power generated in the summer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> season will be<\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> exported to India.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/business\/india-business\/adani-group-officially-commences-570-mw-wangchhu-hydro-power-project-in-bhutan\/articleshow\/126333781.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TOI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project is a 570 MW run-of-river hydropower project being built on the Wangchu River\/basin in Chukha District, Bhutan.
