


{"id":62421,"date":"2025-09-08T13:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T08:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=62421"},"modified":"2025-09-08T13:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T08:09:15","slug":"who-model-lists-of-essential-medicines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/who-model-lists-of-essential-medicines\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO Model Lists of Essential Medicines"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>WHO Model Lists of Essential Medicines Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) released updated editions of its Model Lists of Essential Medicines (EML), adding new treatments for various types of cancer, diabetes, and obesity associated with comorbidities<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About WHO Model Lists of Essential Medicines<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It acts like a register of minimum medicine <\/span><b>needs for every health-care system.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>updated every two years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>History of the Essential Medicines List<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first country in the world to <\/span><b>compose its EML was Tanzania in 1970.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then in 1975, the World Health Assembly requested WHO to assist member states in selecting and procuring essential medicines, assuring good quality at reasonable cost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsequently, the first WHO model list of essential medicines was published in the year <\/span><b>1977 which contained 186 medicines.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0WHO selects essential medicines <\/span><b>based on public health relevance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>evidence of benefits and harms,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and with consideration of costs, affordability and other relevant factors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, over 150 countries have national essential medicines lists based on the WHO Model List.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are Essential Medicines?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), Essential Medicines are those that satisfy the <\/span><b>priority health care needs of the population.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list is made with consideration to <\/span><b>disease prevalence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, efficacy, safety and comparative cost-effectiveness of the medicines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such medicines are intended to be <\/span><b>available in adequate amounts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in appropriate dosage forms and strengths with assured quality.
