


{"id":6247,"date":"2023-03-20T12:02:21","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T06:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6247"},"modified":"2025-03-27T13:40:34","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T08:10:34","slug":"what-is-zealandia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-zealandia\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Zealandia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Zealandia:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a long, narrow <strong>microcontinent<\/strong> that is mostly <strong>submerged in the South Pacific Ocean<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Zealandia or <strong>Te Riu-a-M\u0101ui in the M\u0101ori language<\/strong> was formally one of the <strong>constituent continents<\/strong> of the ancient <strong>supercontinent called Gondwana<\/strong>, which also included Western Antarctica and Eastern Australia over 500 million years ago.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>began to &#8220;pull away&#8221; from Gondwana<\/strong> roughly <strong>105 million years ago.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As Zealandia started pulling away,\u00a0 <strong>it began to sink beneath the waves<\/strong>, with <strong>over 94 percent remaining underwater<\/strong> for millennia.<\/li>\n<li>It is approximately <strong>1.89 million square miles (4.9 million square km) in size<\/strong>, about half the size of Australia.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>vast majority<\/strong> of this new continent <strong>lies beneath 6,560 feet (2km) of water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The part of Zealandia which is a<strong>bove water forms <\/strong>the foundation of <strong>New Zealand&#8217;s north and south islands<\/strong> as well as the <strong>island of New Caledonia<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The existence of Zealandia was <strong>first recorded in 1642 by Dutch businessman<\/strong> and sailor <strong>Abel Tasman<\/strong>, who was on a mission to find the &#8220;great Southern Continent,&#8221; or Terra Australis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Gondwana?<\/h3>\n<p>Gondwana was an ancient supercontinent that broke up about 180 million years ago.
