Each structure will be assigned precise GPS coordinates using mobile devices, ensuring accurate mapping of households and institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will help remove duplication, improve coverage, and create a reliable spatial database to aid urban planning, infrastructure development, and Information System (GIS) map<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>GIS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a computer system that records, checks, and displays data linked to specific positions on Earth\u2019s surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latitudes (horizontal lines) measure north-south distance from the equator, while longitudes (vertical lines) measure east-west distance from the prime meridian in Greenwich, UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, these create a grid that allows any location to be uniquely identified.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this system, geotagging assigns each building a precise locational identity that can be accurately pinpointed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Number of Buildings in India (Census 2011)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Census 2011, a <\/span><b>\u2018Census House\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was defined as any building or part of a building with a separate main entrance, used as a distinct unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such houses could be occupied or vacant, and used for residential, non-residential, or mixed purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Census recorded <\/span><b>330.84 million houses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across India, of which <\/span><b>306.16 million were occupied<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>24.67 million vacant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural areas accounted for <\/span><b>220.70 million houses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <\/span><b>110.14 million were in urban areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How Geotagging Will Be Conducted in Census 2027<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geotagging will take place during the <\/span><b>Houselisting Operations (HLO)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first phase of the Census scheduled for April\u2013September 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second phase, <\/span><b>Population Enumeration <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(will begin in February 2027) will record demographic, socioeconomic, and 400;\">Enumerators will visit all buildings within their assigned Houselisting Blocks (HLBs) \u2014 clearly demarcated areas in villages or town wards with notional maps.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Digital Layout Mapping (DLM) and smartphone apps, they will switch on location services and geotag each building.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exercise will record the number of Census Houses and Households in each
