{"id":6303,"date":"2023-03-21T10:26:06","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T04:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6303"},"modified":"2025-03-27T14:00:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T08:30:20","slug":"what-is-the-right-to-information-rti-act-2005","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-right-to-information-rti-act-2005\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a law enacted by the Parliament of India &#8220;to provide for <strong>setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Right to Information<\/strong> is <strong>derived<\/strong> from our <strong>fundamental right of Expression<\/strong> under <strong>Article 19<\/strong> of the Constitution of India.<\/li>\n<li>The Act <strong>applies to all States and Union Territories<\/strong> of India.<\/li>\n<li>Under the provisions of the Act, <strong>any citizen may request<\/strong> <strong>information<\/strong> <strong>from a &#8220;public authority&#8221;<\/strong> (a body of Government or &#8220;instrumentality of State&#8221;) by making an <strong>application in writing<\/strong> or through <strong>electronic means<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The information seeker is <strong>not required to give reasons<\/strong> for seeking information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time Period for Supply of Information<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the normal course<\/strong>, information to an applicant shall be s<strong>upplied within 30 days<\/strong> from the receipt of the application by the public authority.<\/li>\n<li>If the <strong>information sought concerns the life or liberty of a person<\/strong>, it should be <strong>supplied within 48 hours.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public Information Officer (PIO): Every public authority shall designate <\/strong>some of its officers as<strong> PIOs. <\/strong>They are <strong>responsible for giving information<\/strong> to a person who seeks information under the RTI Act.<\/li>\n<li>The Act also <strong>requires every public authority to computerize their records<\/strong> <strong>for<\/strong> wide dissemination and to <strong>proactively publish <\/strong>certain categories of <strong>information<\/strong> so that the citizens need minimum recourse to request information formally.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exemptions:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It also contains <strong>several exemptions<\/strong> which <strong>enable public authorities to deny<\/strong> requests for information. It ranges from the <strong>sovereignty and security of India to trade secrets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Section 24 of the act exempts certain security and intelligence organizations from the purview of the act <strong>except<\/strong> the information pertaining to the <strong>allegations of corruption and human rights violations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the Central Information Commission?<\/h3>\n<p>The Central Information Commission has been constituted with effect from 12-10-2005 under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
