text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is observed annually on <\/span><b>September 11th<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India to <\/span><b>honor the sacrifices of those<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who have<\/span><b> laid down their lives in defense of the country\u2019s forests and wildlife.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day <\/span><b>honours protective environmentalists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and personnel of the forest who have experienced certain risks in the process of conservation of natural resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>National Forest Martyrs Day <\/b><b>History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day goes back to the memory of the <\/span><b>Khejarli Massacre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which took place in <\/span><b>1730 in the Marwar Kingdom.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The then <\/span><b>Maharaja Abhai Singh demanded Khejri trees from the Bishnoi village of Khejarli to be cut down<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide timber for his new palace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, his action was r<\/span><b>esisted by the Bishnoi community,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has always been very sensitive towards the natural community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villagers <\/span><b>under the leadership of Amrita Devi Bishnoi protested by hugging trees <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to safeguard them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, <\/span><b>Devi and many other members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the village were <\/span><b>slain while defending the trees.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was estimated that<\/span><b> 363 of them died <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while protesting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their legacy <\/span><b>inspired later conservation movements, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chipko-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chipko Movement<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shaping India\u2019s environmental ethos.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recognition of this sacrifice, the <\/span><b>Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of India <\/span><b>declared September 11 as the National Forest Martyrs Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Significance of the <\/b><b>National Forest Martyrs Day<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a tribute to all those who defended nature against exploitation, from illegal logging to poaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It underscores that forests are not just resources; they are lifelines that regulate the climate, purify air and water, and support biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
