{"id":63546,"date":"2025-09-15T12:40:27","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T07:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=63546"},"modified":"2025-09-16T11:20:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T05:50:47","slug":"garra-nambashiensis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/garra-nambashiensis\/","title":{"rendered":"Garra nambashiensis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Garra nambashiensis Latest News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers recently discovered a new species of freshwater fish, Garra nambashiensis, in Manipur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Garra nambashiensis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>new species of freshwater fish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which belongs to the Labeonine family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>discovered in Taretlok,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>tributary of the Chindwin River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, near Nambashi Valley in <\/span><b>Manipur\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kamjong district.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>collected from \u201cswift-flowing riffles<\/b> <b>(shallow sections of a river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or stream) with <\/span><b>algae-covered gravel beds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and mixed substrate comprising cobbles, boulders, pebbles, sand, fine silt, and coarse sediments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species features a quadrate-shaped proboscis, 7-8 acanthoid tubercles on the anterolateral margin, black spots on the opercle, 8-11 dorsal-fin scales, and six black stripes extending to the hypural plate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It typically measures 90-140 mm (9-14 cm), and <\/span><b>locals call it Nutungnu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Currently, 60 species of Garra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been <\/span><b>recorded from various river systems in the Northeast<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encompassing the Eastern Himalayan and Indo-Burma regions.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of these, 32 are grouped in the \u2018proboscis species group\u2019 and occur in the Chindwin, Brahmaputra, Barak, and Kaladan river systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight species have been recorded from the Chindwin river system alone, including the recently described G. chingaiensis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nenow.in\/north-east-news\/manipur\/new-fish-species-garra-nambashiensis-discovered-in-manipurs-taretlok-river.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEN<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Garra nambashiensis is a new species of freshwater fish which belongs to the Labeonine family.
