{"id":6359,"date":"2026-09-27T12:36:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T07:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6359"},"modified":"2026-09-27T17:06:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T11:36:36","slug":"wayanad-wildlife-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wayanad-wildlife-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A two-day vulture survey has begun across the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary ahead of the upcoming Wildlife Week celebrations in Keralam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located in Wayanad, Keralam, in the southern trenches of the <\/span><b>Western Ghats.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established in 1973, the sanctuary covers an expansive 344 sq.km. and forms an integral part of the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nbr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve<\/a>, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is bordered by the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka on the northeastern side and <\/span><b>Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu on the southeastern side.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rivers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rivers like <\/span><b>the Kabini, Cherupuzha, and Bavali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flow through the sanctuary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tribes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tribes living in these forests include some scheduled <\/span><b>adivasis, such as Paniyas, Kattunaikkans, Kurumas, Ooralis, Adiyans, and Kurichiyas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vegetation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a mosaic of the Western Ghats\u2019 significant vegetation types, ranging from moist deciduous to <\/span><b>dry deciduous and semi-evergreen patches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flora:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About one-third of the sanctuary is covered by plantations of teak, rosewood, eucalyptus, and silver oak.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It boasts one of the largest populations of Asian elephants and tigers, which are considered its flagship species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other mammals include leopards, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, wild boars, sloth bears, and jungle cats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/kerala\/vulture-survey-begins-in-wayanad-wildlife-sanctuary\/article71512944.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Wayanad, Kerala, in the southern trenches of the Western Ghats.
