


{"id":6363,"date":"2023-03-18T04:10:53","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T22:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6363"},"modified":"2025-03-27T14:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T08:53:10","slug":"what-is-enzyme-laccase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-enzyme-laccase\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Enzyme Laccase?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Enzyme Laccase:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Laccase <strong>is generated by a group of fungi<\/strong> that have been found capable of degrading a variety of hazardous organic <strong>dye molecules <\/strong>that are regularly drained into waterbodies after dying clothes in the textile industry.<\/li>\n<li>This observed characteristic which the scientists <strong>termed substrate promiscuity<\/strong> can have deep implications in designing enzyme-coated cassettes for treating heavily dye-polluted water.<\/li>\n<li>Laccase was known for its capacity to <strong>degrade various organic molecules.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Laccase, generated by a group of fungi, contains <strong>4 copper atoms<\/strong> in two different <strong>oxidation states<\/strong>, and degrades substrates <strong>through redox reactions<\/strong>, producing only <strong>water a<\/strong>nd the simplest non-virulent or less virulent <strong>Oxides of carbon, Nitrogen and sulphur.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hence the scientists saw scope in using it to develop a technology to treat\/degrade the dye effluents emanating from textile industries.<\/li>\n<li>Combining UV\/Visible spectroscopy and computer simulations they demonstrated that many organic dye molecules with varying kinetics and wide variation in charge, size and shape can be degraded by the enzyme laccase.<\/li>\n<li>This substrate promiscuity of laccase <strong>offers immense biotechnological potential<\/strong> for a broad-spectrum degrader for industrial dye effluents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is enzyme promiscuity?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Enzyme promiscuity is defined as the <strong>capability of an enzyme to catalyze a reaction<\/strong> other than the reaction for which it has been specialized.<\/li>\n<li>Although the enzyme is known for its specificity, many enzymes are reported to be promiscuous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are enzymes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An enzyme is a substance <strong>that acts as a catalyst in living organisms<\/strong> and regulates the rate at which chemical reactions proceed without being altered in the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Biotechnology?<\/h3>\n<p>At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based on biology &#8211;
