Fort due to high levels of air pollution, a recent study has found.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Red Fort<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Fort, or <\/span><b>Lal Qila<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a <\/span><b>Mughal fort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in <\/span><b>Delhi, India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Formerly known as Quila-e-Mubarak, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the<\/span><b> Blessed Fort,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Red Fort <\/span><b>lies along the <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banks of the <\/span><b>river Yamuna,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose waters fed the moats surrounding the fort.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>built as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the <\/span><b>new capital of the fifth Mughal Emperor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of India, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/shah-jahan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shah Jahan<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Shah Jahan constructed it in 1639.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was designed by architects Ustad Ahmad Lahauri and Ustad Hamid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is <\/span><b>adjacent to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an older fort, the <\/span><b>Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 154<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6, with which it forms the Red Fort Complex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort complex served as the <\/span><b>residence of Mughal Emperors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for nearly 200 years, <\/span><b>until 1857.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort was designated a<\/span><b> UNESCO World Heritage site<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2007.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the fort <\/span><b>each year on Independence Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (August 15), the Indian <\/span><b>prime minister participates in a flag-raising ceremony <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and delivers a televised address to the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Red Fort <\/b><b>Architecture<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Fort\u2019s massive <\/span><b>red sandstone walls,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which <\/span><b>stand 75 feet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (23 metres) high,<\/span><b> enclose a complex of palaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>entertainment halls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, p<\/span><b>rojecting balconies, baths <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and indoor canals, and <\/span><b>geometrical gardens,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as an o<\/span><b>rnate mosque.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>planning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the palace is <\/span><b>based on Islamic prototypes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>but each pavilion reveals architectural elements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typical of Mughal buildings, reflecting a <\/span><b>fusion of Persian, Timurid, and Hindu traditions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>fort is octagonal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the north-south axis longer than the east-west axis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the <\/span><b>most famous structures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the complex are the <\/span><b>Hall of Public Audience (Diwan-i-\u02bfAm),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has 60 red sandstone pillars supporting a flat roof, and the <\/span><b>Hall of Private Audience (Diwan-i-Khas),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is smaller and has a pavilion of white marble.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The marble, floral decorations, and double domes in the fort&#8217;s buildings exemplify later Mughal architecture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>2 principal gates\u2013Lahore Drawaza and Delhi Darwaza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along its western and southern sides,
