{"id":63859,"date":"2025-09-17T13:24:27","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T07:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=63859"},"modified":"2025-09-17T14:28:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T08:58:21","slug":"wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies\/","title":{"rendered":"WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b> <b>Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the World Trade Organisation\u2019s agreement on Fisheries Subsidies came into force.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies is the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/world-trade-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>WTO<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s first multilateral agreement with environmental sustainability at its core.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>prohibits government support to illegal fishing activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>overexploitation of stocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contributing to the protection of marine life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was adopted at the <\/span><b>12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in 2022, in Geneva.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>The agreement establishes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first global trade rules designed to curb harmful fisheries subsidies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prohibits subsidies that support illegal, <\/span><b>unreported and unregulated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IUU) fishing, fishing activities targeting overfished stocks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also covers fishing in areas of the high seas that are not covered by a regional fisheries management organisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Implementation of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>WTO Fish Fund<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Ministers have <\/span><b>established this fund <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to provide developing economies and least-developed countries (LDCs) with technical <\/span><b>assistance and capacity-building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed to implement the new obligations and manage <\/span><b>their own fisheries more sustainably.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventeen members have pledged the equivalent of more <\/span><b>than USD 18 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the WTO Fish Fund.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following its entry into force this month, <\/span><b>a Committee on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be created to monitor compliance, review members\u2019 notifications on their subsidy programmes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTO members will be <\/span><b>required to report details of their fishing subsidies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as data such as fish stock levels and conservation measures in place.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/news_e\/news25_e\/fish_15sep25_e.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTO<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies is the WTO&#8217;s first multilateral agreement with environmental sustainability at its core.
