{"id":63859,"date":"2026-07-21T11:24:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T05:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=63859"},"modified":"2026-07-21T13:48:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T08:18:38","slug":"wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wto-agreement-on-fisheries-subsidies\/","title":{"rendered":"WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, India has deposited its Instrument of Acceptance of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS) and became a Party to the Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was adopted by consensus at the <\/span><b>12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva in June 2022.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the first multilateral WTO agreement with an <\/span><b>environmental sustainability objective.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It prohibits government <\/span><b>support to illegal fishing activities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and overexploitation of stocks, contributing to the <\/span><b>protection of marine life.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Agreement <\/span><b>entered into force on 15 September 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after acceptance by two-thirds of WTO Members.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India is the 123rd Member<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the WTO to deposit its Instrument of Acceptance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Features of WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Agreement <\/span><b>focuses on subsidies related<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>marine wild capture fishing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fishing-related activities at sea.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaculture and inland fisheries remain outside the scope of this Agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It protects the livelihoods of traditional and small-scale fishers by promoting sustainable fisheries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>prohibits subsidies linked to <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/illegal-unreported-and-unregulated-iuu-fishing\/\" target=\"_blank\">illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fishing of overfished stocks,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also creates a <\/span><b>more equitable global fisheries regime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by disciplining harmful subsidies that support large, heavily subsidised industrial fishing fleets operated by distant water fishing nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2286763&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies was adopted by consensus at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva in June 2022.
