Iridogorgia Chewbacca.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Iridogorgia Chewbacca<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a new <\/span><b>deep-sea coral species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belonging to<\/span><b> genus Iridogorgia.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coral was discovered in the <\/span><b>tropical western Pacific Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new coral was first seen in <\/span><b>waters off Moloka\u02bbi in 2006<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later near the Mariana Trench in 2016.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named after the furry Star Wars <\/span><b>fictional character<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chewbacca because of its hairy-looking branches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Iridogorgia Chewbacca<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species <\/span><b>belongs to the genus Iridogorgia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a group of deep-sea corals with long, spiraling structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is known for its long, <\/span><b>flexible branches and shiny surface.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each coral colony is made up of thousands of tiny polyps, which work together to form the larger structure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its large size and striking appearance, I. chewbacca usually <\/span><b>occurs alone, scattered across deep-sea rocky bottoms.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What is a Coral?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corals are <\/span><b>essentially animals, which are sessile,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning they permanently attach themselves to the ocean floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corals share a <\/span><b>symbiotic relationship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>single-celled algae called zooxanthellae.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The algae provide the <\/span><b>coral with food and nutrients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which they make through photosynthesis, using the sun\u2019s light.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use their tiny tentacle-like hands to catch food from the water and sweep into their mouth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each
