Gerardii, the new species, stands out for its <\/span><b>chocolate-brown cap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>distinctive microscopic features<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>genetic markers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>grows in association with Khasi pine (Pinus kesiya) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at altitudes of around 1,600 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it resembles the widespread Lactifluus gerardii found in North America and Asia, L. khasianus differs in its larger cystidia (specialised fungal cells) and DNA signatures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is now the <\/span><b>fifth confirmed species of this section in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and notably, the<\/span><b> first to be reported as edible.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Khasi villagers,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> however, the mushroom has never been a stranger. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">\u201cTit iongnah\u201d has long been<b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> gathered from the forest floor, sold in local markets <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the monsoon, and <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">savoured as a seasonal delicacy.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hubnetwork.in\/new-edible-mushroom-species-found-in-meghalaya-long-known-to-khasi-tribes-as-tit-iongnah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HUB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lactifluus khasianus is a newly identified wild edible mushroom species found in Northeast India, known for its ecological role and potential medicinal properties.
