the precise strength, shape, and size of the SAA varies with the seasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was first identified in the 19th century.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Why Does it Occur?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Earth\u2019s magnetic field<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acts like a <\/span><b>protective shield<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the planet, <\/span><b>repelling and trapping charged particles from the Sun.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>SAA exists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because the <\/span><b>Earth\u2019s inner Van Allen radiation belt comes closest to the planet\u2019s surface, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causing an <\/span><b>increased flux of energetic particles.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads to the penetration of solar energetic particles deep into Earth\u2019s atmosphere, posing severe<\/span><b> problems for airplanes and ships\u2019 positioning systems <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as <\/span><b>spacecraft electronic systems.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What are the Van Allen Radiation Belts?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Van Allen radiation belt is a <\/span><b>zone of energetic charged particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>most of which originate from the solar wind.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The particles are <\/span><b>captured by and held<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around a planet <\/span><b>by that planet\u2019s magnetic field.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>surrounds Earth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, containing a nearly impenetrable barrier that <\/span><b>prevents the fastest, most energetic electrons from reaching Earth.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>outer belt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is made up of billions of <\/span><b>high-energy particles that originate from the Sun <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and become trapped in Earth\u2019s magnetic field, an area known as the magnetosphere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>inner belt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> results from i<\/span><b>nteractions of cosmic rays with Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Van Allen belts are <\/span><b>most intense over the Equator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are <\/span><b>effectively absent above the poles.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These radiation belts <\/span><b>serve both protective and hazardous roles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;
