They also release greenhouse gases, worsening climate change and harming ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Economic Loss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Inefficient recycling causes wastage of valuable resources such as gold, silver, and copper, which could otherwise be recovered and reused in production.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Link with Environmental, Gocial, and Governance (ESG) and SDGs<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-waste management aligns with global sustainability frameworks:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SDG 13: Climate Action.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It strengthens India\u2019s ESG commitments by integrating resource efficiency and environmental protection into growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Electronics Consumption and Indigenous Push<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India, despite having over 93.9 crore mobile broadband connections, accounts for only 4<\/span><b>% of global electronics consumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragile global supply chains have pushed the government to expand domestic manufacturing and raw material access, including a \u20b91,500 crore mineral recycling scheme announced in September.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>E-Waste Volumes and Processing<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global E-Waste Monitor 2020<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, India is the <\/span><b>world\u2019s third-largest e-waste generator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after China and the USA.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With India being one of the fastest-growing electronics markets, this trend is expected to rise further.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per one report, India\u2019s electronics industry to grow at a CAGR of 16.6%, from USD 215 billion in FY19 to USD 540 billion by FY25.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This rapid expansion will add significantly to e-waste volumes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India generated an estimated <\/span><b>4.17 million metric tonnes of e-waste in 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third was processed through proper channels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Legal Framework for E-Waste Management<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improper disposal of end-of-life EEE products has severe negative externalities, including risks to human health and environmental degradation. Effective management is essential to mitigate these harms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-waste in India is regulated by the <\/span><b><i>E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022<\/i><\/b><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
