{"id":65976,"date":"2025-10-01T15:23:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T09:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=65976"},"modified":"2025-10-01T15:23:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T09:53:22","slug":"false-smut-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/false-smut-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"False Smut Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>False Smut Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to reports, the paddy crop, which is at the maturing and harvest stage, has been infested with false smut disease, causing widespread damage across Punjab.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About False Smut Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">False smut (<\/span><b>haldi rog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an important <\/span><b>fungal disease of rice (paddy).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by the <\/span><b>fungus Ustilaginoidea virens.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>Lakshmi disease <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>Oothupathi disease <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of rice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is <\/span><b>hard to stop,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because <\/span><b>fungus infects the crop during the flowering stage, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>symptoms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the disease are <\/span><b>evident after emergence of rice panicles.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> typical symptom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the disease is <\/span><b>black fungal mycelium growth in paddy grains, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which <\/span><b>become covered with yellow fungal growth i<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Mature spores are orange<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>turn yellowish green or greenish black in colour.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Only a few grains in a panicle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>usually infected,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the rest are normal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>doesn&#8217;t directly impact other plant parts.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><b> causes chalkiness of grains, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which <\/span><b>leads to reduction in grain weight.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It also <\/span><b>reduces seed germination.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The percentage of infected panicles and the extent of infection within each panicle significantly <\/span><b>impact yield loss.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Favorable Factors for False Smut in Paddy Crops?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Warm and humid weather:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Temperatures between <\/span><b>25-30\u00b0C and high humidity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (&gt;80%) promote fungal growth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Presence of infected plant debris:<\/b> <b>Spores <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><b> survive on leftover stubbl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e and straw from previous harvests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>High nitrogen content in soil:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Excessive nitrogen application can increase susceptibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Control o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f false smut of rice<\/span><b> through fungicide application is feasible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; however, high usage of fungicides has <\/span><b>led to the resistance development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in causal agents besides environmental pollution. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/cities\/chandigarh-news\/false-smut-spread-as-farmers-missed-anti-fungal-spraying-due-to-rains-experts-101759263923710.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>False Smut Disease is an important fungal disease of rice (paddy).
