{"id":6611,"date":"2026-04-19T14:30:59","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6611"},"modified":"2026-04-20T17:25:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T11:55:13","slug":"what-is-national-mineral-exploration-trust-nmet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-national-mineral-exploration-trust-nmet\/","title":{"rendered":"National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, in its 23rd report on the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMEDT), the Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel said offshore exploration presents a \u201csignificant opportunity\u201d to harness largely untapped seabed minerals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is set up by the <\/span><b>Central Government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the purposes of <\/span><b>regional and detailed exploration of minerals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using the funds accrued to it and in such manner as prescribed by the Central Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mines-and-minerals-development-and-regulation-amendment-bill-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mines and Minerals (Development &amp; Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, (MMRDA)<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Structure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has a two-tier structure.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Apex Body:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the Governing Body, chaired by the <\/span><b>Minister of Mines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It holds the overall control of the Trust.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Executive Committee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, administers and manages its activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To implement mandated activities an <\/span><b>NMET Fund has been established<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NMET Fund <\/span><b>receives money from holders of mining lease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a prospecting license-cum-mining lease, an amount equivalent to two percent of royalty paid in terms of the Second Schedule of the MMDR Act.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functions of NMET<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Funding special studies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and projects designed to identify, explore, extract, beneficiate and refine deep-seated or concealed mineral deposits;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Undertaking studies for mineral development,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sustainable mining, adoption of advanced scientific and technological practices and mineral extraction metallurgy;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detailed and r<\/span><b>egional exploration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for strategic and critical minerals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facilitating a national core repository for encouraging research in earth sciences and for evaluation of the mineral prospects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/industry\/news\/parliamentary-panel-flags-policy-capacity-gaps-in-offshore-mining-push-126041700990_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust funds regional and detailed mineral exploration using Central Government resources.
