text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located <\/span><b>at the continental margin off the coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies about 250-300 km offshore from the city of Mar del Plata.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of Argentina\u2019s largest submarine canyons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area is characterised by fine sand with a mixture of terrigenous material and planktonic foraminifera substrate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> highly productive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>influenced by the permanent Argentine Shelf-break Front.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A submarine canyon is any of a class of <\/span><b>narrow, steep-sided valleys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that c<\/span><b>ut into continental slopes and continental rises<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submarine canyons <\/span><b>originate either within continental slopes or on a continental shelf.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>rare on continental margins<\/b> <b>that have extremely steep continental slopes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or escarpments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most submarine canyons extend only about 48 km (30 miles) or less in length, but a few are more than 320 km (200 miles) long.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They usually are <\/span><b>many kilometres in width;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for instance, the <\/span><b>Grand Bahama Canyon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measures 37 km (23 miles) at its widest point.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submarine canyons are so called because they <\/span><b>resemble canyons made by rivers on land.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A relatively l<\/span><b>arge number of submarine canyons <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><b> located directly offshore of river canyons of adjacent land areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and may have once been connected to extensions of the latter.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, however, the <\/span><b>characteristics of the submarine variety and <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those of the <\/span><b>nearby land canyons are quite distinct.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like rivers on land, these underwater features act as the <\/span><b>primary conduits for sediments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(and associated nutrients and organic carbon)<\/span><b> transported from the continental shelf to the deep ocean basins. <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
