It is about 24 km in length and has a maximum width of about 12 km at its widest point.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island comprises <\/span><b>three extinct volcanoes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, namely <\/span><b>Terevaka, Poike, and Rano Kau.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It faces a<\/span><b> tropical rainforest climate.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>UNESCO named Easter Island a World Heritage Site <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on March 22, 1996, and <\/span><b>major parts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the island have been <\/span><b>protected under the Rapa Nui National Park.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What are Moai Statues?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Rapa Nui<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>famous for<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its <\/span><b>large megalithic statues called moai.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>shaped like large human heads<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>erected on stone pedestals.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are famous for their <\/span><b>carved heads and \u201cPukao,\u201d a hat-like covering made from a soft red stone.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some moai stand <\/span><b>40 feet tall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and weigh 75 tonnes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were <\/span><b>carved in volcanic stone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at quarries and then <\/span><b>moved to their current locations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the island.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scholars believe the<\/span><b> Rapa Nui people built<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the moai between the <\/span><b>13th and the 16th centuries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and represented their revered ancestors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Over 900 moai <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been found on the island to date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What do Moais represent?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were built to <\/span><b>honor chieftains or other important people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who had passed away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were <\/span><b>placed on rectangular stone platforms called ahu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are tombs for the people that the statues represented.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moais were<\/span><b> intentionally made with different characteristics <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since they were intended to keep the appearance of the person they represented.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archaeologymag.com\/2025\/10\/easter-islands-moai-statues-really-walked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ARCH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Easter Island is a Polynesian island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean.
