{"id":6788,"date":"2025-01-10T10:12:28","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T04:42:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6788"},"modified":"2025-03-28T14:57:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T09:27:55","slug":"z-morh-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/z-morh-tunnel\/","title":{"rendered":"Z-Morh Tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Z-Morh Tunnel:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>2-lane road tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg on<\/strong> the <strong>Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The name \u201cZ-Morh\u201d refers to the Z-shaped road section near the construction site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Why was the tunnel needed?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The area where the tunnel is being constructed sits at <strong>an altitude of over 8,500 ft<\/strong> and is prone to snow avalanches, which make the <strong>road to Sonamarg impassable during most parts of the winter.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Length: 6.5 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The tunnel is designed for the flow of <strong>1,000 vehicles an hour<\/strong> at an approved maximum speed of 80 km per hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No toll tax<\/strong> will be collected from vehicles using the tunnel.<\/li>\n<li>In addition to the main tunnel, it includes a <strong>parallel<\/strong> 6.426 km long <strong>Escape Tunnel and<\/strong> a 0.6 km long <strong>Ventilation Tunnel.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Intelligent Traffic Management System<\/strong> has been installed in Z-Morh Tunnel which will make it easier to control traffic. Along with this, traffic will be facilitated through the dedicated escape tunnel.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic Importance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In addition to providing <strong>all-weather access to Sonamarg<\/strong>, the tunnel is <strong>vital for ensuring year-round connectivity to Ladakh.<\/strong> This is particularly important for the <strong>movement of military personnel<\/strong> to border areas.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Along with the 14.15 km Zojila Tunnel to its east<\/strong>, it <strong>aims to enhance<\/strong> the Indian <strong>military\u2019s capabilities in Kashmir and Ladakh along<\/strong> both the Line of Control (<strong>LOC<\/strong>) to the north and the Line of Actual Control (<strong>LAC<\/strong>) further east.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1: What is the Zojila Tunnel?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The 14.15 km Zoji La Tunnel is an under construction 2 lane road project between Sonamarg and Drass on the Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir.
