discuss the Polavaram project.<\/p>\n<h2>About Polavaram Project<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>multi-purpose irrigation project<\/strong>\u00a0built on the\u00a0<strong>Godavari River<\/strong>\u00a0where the river emerges out of the last range of the Eastern Ghats and enters the plains.<\/li>\n<li>The dam will be located near\u00a0<strong>Polavaram village<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh<\/strong>, an\u00a0<strong>area bordering Chhattisgarh and Odisha<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was conceived in 1980 as a part of the recommendations of the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT).<\/li>\n<li>It has been accorded\u00a0<strong>national project status<\/strong>\u00a0by the central government.<\/li>\n<li>It involves the\u00a0<strong>construction of a dam\u00a0<\/strong>to address water scarcity, boost agricultural productivity, and generate power.\n<ul>\n<li>The span of the dam is about 1.2 km, having a pier height of 54 m and a total of 48 radial gates (16mx20m).<\/li>\n<li>Designed to\u00a0<strong>withstand massive floods<\/strong>\u00a0that could occur once in 1000 years, the\u00a0<strong>Polavaram Spillway<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>set to have the highest discharge capacity in the world.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At 50 lakh cusecs, it is\u00a0<strong>set to surpass even the 3 Gorges Dam of China,\u00a0<\/strong>one of the largest dams in the world.<\/li>\n<li>The project has\u00a0<strong>set a world record by pouring 32,315.5 cubic metres of concrete into the spillway channel<\/strong>\u00a0of the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Polavaram Project Objectives<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is intended for the development of a gross i<strong>rrigation potential<\/strong>\u00a0of 4,36,825 ha.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project also envisages the\u00a0<strong>generation of 960 MW of hydropower and drinking water supply<\/strong>\u00a0to a population of 28.50 lakh in 611 villages.<\/li>\n<li>The project also aims to\u00a0<strong>transfer 80 TMC\u00a0<\/strong>(Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of\u00a0<strong>water from the Godavari to the Krishna<\/strong>\u00a0river basin.<\/li>\n<li>The dam will\u00a0<strong>help manage floodwaters from the Godavari River<\/strong>, reducing risks to nearby communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Polavaram
