{"id":6865,"date":"2023-03-31T11:58:20","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T06:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6865"},"modified":"2025-03-28T15:28:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T09:58:42","slug":"tibetan-buddhism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tibetan-buddhism\/","title":{"rendered":"Tibetan Buddhism"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Tibetan Buddhism:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Buddhism originated in India and became the predominant religion in Tibet by the 9th century AD.<\/li>\n<li>It evolved from the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions of Buddhism, incorporating many tantric and shamanic practices of both post-Gupta period Buddhism in India.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan Buddhism also incorporates the Bon religion which was spread across Tibet before Buddhism\u2019s arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan Buddhism has 4 major schools: <strong>Nyingma <\/strong>(8th century), <strong>Kagyu <\/strong>(11th century), <strong>Sakya<\/strong> (1073) and <strong>Gelug<\/strong> (1409)<\/li>\n<li>The Janang school (12th century) is one of the smaller schools that grew as an offshoot of the <strong>Sakya school.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is Gelug School?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Since 1640, the Gelug School has been the predominant school of Tibetan Buddhism.<\/li>\n<li>The Dalai Lama belongs to Gelug School (\u2018<strong>Dalai\u2019 means \u2018ocean\u2019 in Mongol<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>The Dalai Lama is the <strong>foremost spiritual and temporal authority of Tibet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The 5th grand lama of the school, <strong>Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso<\/strong>, was first conferred the title of Dalai Lama.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>To consolidate his rule, he instituted the tradition of succession through reincarnation in the Gelug School.<\/li>\n<li>He claimed to be the reincarnation of <strong>Avalokiteshvara<\/strong>, one of the most important Bodhisattvas in Mahayana traditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Nyingma School of Buddhism?<\/h3>\n<p>The Nyingma School is also called Nyingmapa, is the oldest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
