{"id":6909,"date":"2026-09-06T14:13:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T08:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=6909"},"modified":"2026-09-06T18:39:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T13:09:32","slug":"what-is-the-bar-council-of-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-bar-council-of-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Bar Council of India (BCI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Bar Council of India Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Supreme Court declared that the Bar Council of India (BCI) and its chairperson lack jurisdiction to discipline or penalise law students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Bar Council of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>statutory body<\/b> <b>created by Parliament<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to regulate and represent the Indian bar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established <\/span><b>under the Advocates Act, 1961<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on the recommendations of the All India Bar Committee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objective:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Its main objective is <strong>s<\/strong><\/span><b>afeguarding the rights, interest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>s<\/strong>, and privileges <strong>o<\/strong><\/span><b>f advocates throughout India.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functions of Bar Council of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Regulatory:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It <\/span><b>performs the regulatory function<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by prescribing standards of professional conduct and etiquette and by exercising disciplinary jurisdiction over the bar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Setting Standard:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It also <\/span><b>sets standards for legal education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and grants recognition to Universities whose degrees in law will serve as qualification for enrolment as an advocate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BCI also <\/span><b>funds welfare schemes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for economically weaker and physically handicapped advocates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other functions<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>conducts the All India Bar Examination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AIBE) to grant a \u2018Certificate of Practice\u2019 to advocates practising law in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>also recognizes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><b>a reciprocal basis foreign qualifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in law obtained outside India for admission as an advocate under this Act.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Composition of Bar Council of India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises members <\/span><b>elected from each State Bar Council, the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/attorney-general\/\" target=\"_blank\">Attorney General of India<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Solicitor of India, who serve as members automatically.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The members of <\/span><b>the State Bar Councils are<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elected for <\/span><b>five years.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Council has the <\/span><b>power to choose its own Chairman and Vice-Chairman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from among its members, and they serve for two years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-rules-that-bci-has-no-power-to-punish-law-students\/article71422900.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bar Council of India is a statutory body created by Parliament to regulate and represent the Indian bar.
