{"id":69240,"date":"2025-10-16T13:10:54","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T07:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=69240"},"modified":"2025-10-16T13:10:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T07:40:54","slug":"saime-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/saime-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"SAIME Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>SAIME Initiative Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, a model of Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) in West Bengal\u2019s Sundarbans has been conferred Global Technical Recognition by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About SAIME Initiative<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAIME) is a multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) to strengthen transformative processes in shrimp trade as a basis for the <\/span><b>protection of<\/b> <b>mangrove ecosystems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>West Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>climate-adaptive and conservation-linked livelihood initiative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that integrates brackish water <\/span><b>shrimp-based aquaculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>mangrove restoration.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>ecosystem-based, climate-adaptive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and conservation-linked livelihood approach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Implemented by:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has been implemented in collaboration with <\/span><b>Global Nature Fund<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GNF), <\/span><b>Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturland, and <\/span><b>Bangladesh Environment &amp; Development Society (BEDS),<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are Mangroves?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mangroves are <\/span><b>salt-tolerant trees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and shrubs that grow in coastal intertidal zones, <\/span><b>primarily in tropical and subtropical regions.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Characteristics of Mangroves<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Salt Tolerance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They possess specialised <\/span><b>root structures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as salt-filtering roots and salt-excreting leaves, to manage high salinity levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Aerial Roots (Pneumatophores):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These roots help in respiration by obtaining oxygen from the air in waterlogged soils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prop Roots:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Provide stability against tidal waves and storm surges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vivipary (Seed Germination):<\/b> <b>Seeds germinate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while still attached to the parent tree to overcome the challenge of germination in saline water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Efficient Carbon Sequestration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mangroves are among the most carbon-rich ecosystems, playing a vital role in mitigating climate change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecological Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mangrove forests act as a <\/span><b>crucial buffer between land and sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing habitat for various marine and terrestrial species.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/west-bengal\/sundarbans-aquaculture-model-wins-fao-global-recognition\/article70168334.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAIME Initiative  is a multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) to strengthen transformative processes in shrimp trade as a basis for the protection of mangrove ecosystems in West Bengal.
