{"id":7032,"date":"2023-04-02T02:54:35","date_gmt":"2023-04-01T21:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7032"},"modified":"2025-03-28T16:34:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T11:04:46","slug":"deoxyribonucleic-acid-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/deoxyribonucleic-acid-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)<\/strong>\u00a0is a set of instructions found in a cell.<\/li>\n<li>These instructions are used for the growth and development of an organism.<\/li>\n<li>The DNA of a person is unique, and variation in the sequence of DNA can be used to match individuals and identify them.<\/li>\n<li>DNA technology, therefore allows for accurate establishment of an individual\u2019s identity.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, DNA-based technology helps in identification of victims in the event of terrorist attacks or natural disasters such as earthquakes.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, DNA technology has been used to identify victims of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001, and disasters such as the Asian tsunami in 2004.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Further, DNA profiling can be used in civil matters, such as parentage related disputes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Precedents set by court:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bhabani Prasad Jena, 2010 &amp; Banarsi Dass, 2005:\u00a0<\/strong>Precedents set by the Supreme Court through the years show that judges cannot order genetic tests as a \u201croving enquiry\u201d (\u00a0Bhabani Prasad Jena, 2010) and they must balance \u201cthe interests of the parties\u201d (\u00a0Banarsi Dass, 2005).<\/li>\n<li>DNA tests should also not be ordered if there was other material evidence at hand to prove the case.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ashok Kumar v.
